I wonder if most “writers” wrote as much as they thought about writing what kind of content would be out there. I mean it seems that I personally think about topics and great ideas, some of which I actually write down – even when they come in the middle of the night – and never get a chance to revisit them. I plan out a chapter of my “book in progress” each day or so, highlighting a great character trait or plot twist…and then it vanishes mostly from my head…replaced by another thought or idea… Of course, all these ideas that come and pass are not great, not even worth writing about, but every now and again I chide myself for not actually taking the time to write about them.

Perhaps writing in many ways is like exercising…it takes more motivation, discipline and practice at just getting it done than I would often like to admit…but in the same instance the results cannot be dismissed…consistency really gets results. My philosophy (not always practiced mind you) is to get in at least writing and exercise every day. Those are the two things that matter most (relatively speaking)…but many days the ideas flood in and the time slips by …and well, the results speak for themselves – no book finished and I’m up at all hours reading other people’s good blogs.

Today’s personal favorite in the world of blogs comes from (many day’s personal favorite) an Irish author named Adrian McKinty. His blog “The Psychopathology of Everyday Life” at http://adrianmckinty.blogspot.com/ always gives me inspiration to keep on writing. Not only is he an excellent blogger, his work is amazing. I recently finished one of his YA books called The Lighthouse Land and the prose was so beautiful…beyond the story and the characters…this is a man whose choice of words seems to flow seamlessly…I find some of his phrases float into my mind over and over…so real and yet so well written it was like someone could hear my thoughts but say what I wanted to say so much more eloquently than I could imagine…OK, I’m gushing, but I do highly recommend his blog and his work. He shows you how it’s done – to borrow a cliche’ phrase, he keeps it real. Looks like I’m onboard, one of the blogging team, part of the cool kids… I guess it’s been about 5 years since I’ve had much contact with blogging…then it was an assignment for graduate school, an arduous one at that… mostly because the subject matter appealed to me little and the idea of being forced to read and comment to material and other people’s opionions or rantings seemed like punishment — but I made it through the class and vowed to stay away from blogs as long as humanly possible…however, I am moved by pretty things…be them pretty words or pretty pictures, or even pretty words that make pretty pictures (or a great pair of pretty shoes), so over time I was lured back by some blogs I really enjoyed … the most recent favorite is the fashion blog The Sartorialist. Now that I’ve made nice with the idea of blogging again…reading and writing them, I hope that my writing mind will improve and all my jumbled ideas will become something a little more cohesive…maybe even worth a read, or a reread, if only by me…I find that sometimes, in the midst of what seems like a bunch of nothing, there is a bit of a gem, a nugget of something good, even great, that can be mined out and made into something much more than you imagined…yeah, I’m still a dreamer…guess there’s hope for me yet….
